LIVING

Considered to be the oldest kingdom in the world, Denmark offers an immense variety of landscapes, a magnificent coastline and much evidence of prehistoric civilisation. It is a small country, about two thirds of which consists of the Jutland peninsula linked to the rest of Europe by the border with Germany; the other two main areas of Denmark are Fyn and Sjaelland which is where Copenhagen is.

Denmark’s largest cities offer many attractions, but its real appeal lies in the small provincial towns and villages. An excellent network of roads, bridges and ferries will help you see attractive ‘out of the way’ places in addition to the popular tourist centres. Driving here is very relaxed, as the roads are not busy and with its countless paths and tracks, Denmark must be one of the most pleasant countries in Europe to explore by bicycle.

The city of Viborg is the fourth largest in Denmark and has a population of approximately 44,000 but the Kommune (Council) covers an area with 90,000 inhabitants. Viborg offers a wide variety of shops, bars and restaurants within the city centre and a number of superstores on the outskirts. For sports and entertainment there is a large cine ma, bowling alley, swimming pool, golf course and is home to Viborg FF football team and Viborg HK handball team. For up-to-date information in English about Viborg please visit the Kommune website – www.viborg.dk.

Since Denmark is almost entirely surrounded by sea it has a mild maritime climate which can be very changeable. April to July is normally considered to be the driest months but this is not always the case. The climate is very similar to Edinburgh and the lowlands of Scotland.

The Danish language is Nordic in origin and is very similar to Norwegian and Swedish. However, most Danes, speak excellent English so you will not have too many communication problems.

WORKING

There are two main work locations in this area – UKSE and CAOC 1. The majority of personnel will be working out of the CAOC at Finderup which is located approx 8 miles from Viborg. The UKSE facility 'Britannia House' contains the HR section and BFPO. Travel to CAOC is by personal vehicle with personnel claiming HDT on a monthly basis. The parent unit for personnel stationed in Denmark is UKJSU, NATO JWC in Stavanger Norway.

ARRIVAL

Arrivals are allocated a Sponsor prior to arrival in Denmark to help them and their families (if applicable) settle in to the country. Local administrative procedures make this quite a challenge initially and it often takes at least a week to complete the procedure. Before personnel arrive in Theatre they are sent a ‘Welcome to Denmark booklet’ containing lots of useful information.

MOVING TO DENMARK

Official Route.  The officially recognised method of travel to Denmark for all personnel and their families is by sea from Harwich to Esbjerg on the West Coast of Jutland (some 20 hours sailing), about 2 hours drive from Viborg.  Full details will be given in the movement instructions you will receive from the Joint Services Travel Centre (JSTC), who will make all the necessary arrangements (having received your movement directive from the Single-Service Drafting Authorities accompanied by an F MOV/564).  Roads in Denmark are well sign posted and, in general, travel is stress free and relatively straightforward.

Some personnel may arrive by air.  The nearest airport is Karup (via Heathrow, Manchester or Birmingham connecting via Copenhagen).  Alternatively, there are various other routes into Esbjerg, Billund and Aarhus.
