Below are a number of tips that may be useful during your posting at Ramstein:

  1. Forces Travel. The UKJSU has its own travel agent office located in Building 539 and is able to book channel crossings and flights at special military rates. The office can also arrange holidays.
  2. "Cheap" Flights. There are a number of flights that go from London Stansted to Frankfurt Hahn. This airport is about 1 hour away from Ramstein and normally offers the best deals on flights. Frankfurt Main Airport is closer to Frankfurt City and it takes slightly over an hour to get to. There are a number of bus services from both of these airports to Ramstein.

Places to visit - less than 1 hour's drive from Ramstein

  • Landstuhl. Visit Burg Nanstein, originally built in 1160, but restored from 1856 after many years of battle and ruin. This castle ruin sites on top of a hill which has great views looking down onto Landstuhl and of course the base. Landstuhl is about 3km from the base. Bismark Tower is another place to visit and sits on the opposite hill to the castle. It was built in 1900 and visitors can get an excellent view of the surrounding area.
  • Mannheim. This large city is around 1 hour away from Ramstein. It is an excellent place for clothes shopping with plenty of car parking within the city centre. There are a number of museums to visit including the Museum Ship, which shows boats and ships from the 19th centuries.
  • Heidelberg. This place is around 1 hour away from Ramstein. It is very good for shopping and sightseeing. Heidelberg castle is in the centre of the town and looks into the valley. There are a number of guided tours for those interested in the history of the place.
  • Speyer. Again another little place to visit which was built on the Rhine. Speyer has a 1000 year old cathedral which holds the graves of 8 German emperors and kings. A visit to the open air museum is well worth a look. Speyer is approx 1 hour's drive from Ramstein.

Places to visit - more than 1 hour's drive from Ramstein

  • Cologne. This is an impressive city on the Rhine River. A Gothic cathedral dominates the centre of this city where visitors can climb to the top to see the whole city from a height. Also on offer is the Chocolate Museum where visitors can watch the production of milk chocolate, truffles and get a taste of hot liquid chocolate on wafers.
  • Rothernburg. This beautiful town has a lot on offer. A large Roman wall surrounds the town where visitors can walk in to get great views of the surrounding area. There are a lot of museums and a large Kathe Wohlfahrt Christmas shop.
  • Luxembourg City. There are a number of historical buildings and monuments to visit including the Grand Ducal Palace dating back to 1572.
  • Paris.For some this city seems miles away from Ramstein. Actually it is only 4 hours away so it makes it a nice place to visit for a weekend. From the Eiffel Tower to the Louvre, there is plenty to see.
