LIVING:  In Southern Italy winters are mild compared to UK but include short sharp cold spells.  Summers are long, hot and humid and in July & August temperatures often exceed 30◦.  In Northern Italy winters are often comparable to Southern England.  Summers are hot and often humid.

NAPLES.   JFC Naples and its collated Commands are located on the outskirts of the city.  Naples is a vibrant city, full of surprises and contrasts, with a character and life unique even by Italian standards.  It is a fascinating city and there are many places to see and visit both in the city and the surrounding areas.  Naples is considered to be the poor relation to the rest of Italy, yet it has much to offer and the majority of its people are cheerful and welcoming even if their behaviour can be erratic – especially on the roads!  Petty crime is prevalent but can be avoided by taking precautions.  Most of the housing for British military familes centres round a small area called Lago Patria, a 30mins drive from JFC and Naples itself.  The British Forces School, Playgroup, Crèche and Community Centre/Hive are also located in Lago Patria.  The UKNSU website www.uknsunaples.com provides a wealth of information.

MILAN.  HQ RRC MILAN  is located at Solbiate Olona, approx 30kms from Milan centre.  Milan itself is a fast-paced city which cannot match Rome with its monuments, but it does have history, with churches and museums that bring you up to speed on things long past. It also has parks and stylish cafes where you can watch elegant people passing on their way to important business meetings, or the latest showing at one of the finest fashion houses in the world.  Theatre, cinema and a club scene par excellence is what drives the Milanese, apart from shopping!

ROME.  The NATO Defence College is located in Cecchignola which is on the edge of the city of Rome.  The Embassy and exchange posts are in the city centre.  Rome, the “eternal city”, has much to offer. Thousands of years of history lie beneath your feet, ancient architecture stands before your eyes.  When in Rome, do as the Romans." That classic advice leads to a wealth of options: Should you follow Augustus and Caesar, whose Rome is filled with spectacular ancient structures? Or Michelangelo and Da Vinci, whose city invites artistic pilgrimage? Rome encompasses all this and more.

LATINA.  Latina is a small town within the Province of Latina which was established in 1935 after the recovery of the marshy lands of the Agro Pontino.  The military Base is on the edge of the town and families are housed within a 10km radius.  Latina is a short drive from beautiful sandy beaches and is 40mins away from Rome.

POGGIO RENATICO  The closest town to the Base at Poggio Renatico is Ferrara (approx 15kms).  Ferrara is a UNESCO World Heritage site, situated 30 miles northeast of Bologna, on the Po di Volano, a branch channel of the main stream of the Po river.  Ferrara is a fascinating medieval town.  It has broad streets and numerous palaces, which date from the 14th century when it was the seat of the court of the house of Este.  Ferrara hosts Synagogues and a Jewish Museum, in the heart of the medieval centre, close to the Cathedral and the Castello Estense.  This street was part of the ghetto in which the Jews were separated from the rest of the population of Ferrara from 1627 to 1859.

TURIN  Three RAF personnel are posted to work with the Italian Air Force for “Alenia” which is an aircraft manufacturing company, located in the centre of Turin.  Turin is located on the Po River, and is a well planned city with wide streets, squares and parks, The centre of Turin is where you find the city of yesteryear with grand churches and palaces which architecture will take you back into time. Turin is known as the Car Capital if Italy. Fiat, owned by the powerful Agnelli family is here and Turin is known as a very rich and flourishing industrial hub. Fiat also owns Lancia and Alpha Romeo and Ferrari.

TARANTO  This post is occupied by a Lt Cdr RN who lives in Taranto and works with the Italian Navy

LA SPEZIA  Is another post occupied by a Lt Cdr RN who lives and works in the Itlian Naval port of La Spezia.

NOVARA  Two RAF personnel work at the International Procurements organisation in the city of Novara.  Novara is a modern industrial city with a beautiful historical centre.  It is located approximately half way between Milan and Turin in the Piemonte region.

WORKING:

ALL LOCATIONS:  It is essential that all military personnel are able to drive and bring their own vehicle whilst stationed in Italy.  Spouses are strongly recommended to hold a full UK licence.  Public transport throughout Italy is excellent within cities but extremely poor out of town.  A personal car is one of the keys to an enjoyable tour in Italy.

ARRIVAL:  An arrivals booklet is sent to all.  In Naples the UKNSU will nominate a sponsor for all arrivals to help prepare before arrival and during the arrival and settling processes (see UKNSU website, www.uknsunaples.com, for further information).  The outstations each differ and it may be the person you are replacing who assists.  It is most important that spouses of non-EU nationality obtain a Visa before setting off for Italy.  Non-EU dependants are required to apply for a Sojourner’s permit on arrival in Italy and a Visa is essential for this application.
