CLIMATE:
ALL LOCATIONS For all locations, similar to living in the South of England although summers can be slightly warmer.
HQ JFC BRUNSSUM: Brunssum is located in the south of the province of Limburg in the Netherlands between Germany and Belgium. Heerlen is the closest large town which has a modern shopping centre and the City of Maastricht is only a 20 minutes drive away.
NPC GLONS: Situated just over the Belgian border from Maastricht, Glons is set in an attractive rural setting surrounded by pasture and arable fields.
MAASTRICHT: Maastricht is a beautiful old city, steeped in history, boasting two Basilicas and many other buildings of architechtural note. The city also boasts a vibrant modern shopping centre and the main square is a great place to experience European cafe culture at its best.
ARRIVAL
JFC HQ BRUNSSUM. Arrivals are allocated a Sponsor in order to help them and their families (if applicable) settle into The Netherlands. Local administrative procedures make this quite a challenge and it often takes a good week or more to complete the booking-in cycle. Before personnel arrive in theatre, they are sent an arrivals pack that gives a detailed insight to life and living in The Netherlands.
NPC GLONS. Glons is situated just inside Belgium not too far from Maastricht where most Glons personnel are housed. Glons personnel are administered by UKDSU Brunssum apart from their BFPO postal service which is currently supplied on a grace and favour basis by UKSU SHAPE. There is some confusion at the moment as to whether Glons personnel receive the Dutch or Belgian tax free allowances but it is hoped that this will be resolved in the near future.
I NSB. The 1st Nato Signals Battalion is based in Tapijn Barracks, Maastricht, only a short walk from the city centre. All British personnel serving with 1 NSB are administered by UKDSU in Brunssum which is only a 20 minute drive away.
