Elmpt Station

Elmpt Station

Elmpt Station was constructed on drained marshland within a heavily forested area during the period February 1952 to July 1953. This was a remarkably quick construction as a need to house the rapidly expanding NATO forces in the early fifties.

The demise of RAF Bruggen, as the last Main Operating Base in Mainland Europe, was made public in 1998 and the withdrawal process began in 1999. The official closure ceremony of the Station was held on 15-17 June 2001. The camp was then officially taken over by the Army on 28th February 2002.

RAF Bruggen was named originally after the nearest railhead, in the North Rhine Westphalia village of Bruggen , however, it is actually situated just outside the village of Elmpt. It was for this reason that the Army took the decision in late 2001 to change the name to Elmpt Station. The name Javelin Barracks was adopted due to the use of the ‘Javelin' flash by members of the 1st Signal Brigade.

Elmpt Station is under command of Rhine and European Support Group (RESG), although Units on Station are under Op Command of other Headquarters/Brigades.

7 Signal Regiment, is based in Javelin Barracks at Elmpt. The Regiment is responsible for the provision of information and communication services (ICS) to staff at HQ Allied Rapid Reaction Corps' Main, Secondary and Tactical Command Posts. Additionally, 7 Signal Regiment delivers smaller, but extremely capable packages of communications capability, known as 'Digital Detachments'. These are deployed to the headquarters of up to 10 subordinate formations and provide a range of ICS that allows the Commander and his staff to communicate and exchange information with subordinate commanders and staff. Other key tasks include the provision of high-tech CIS recce packs used by the Forward Liaison and Reconnaissance Group, and delivery of the ARRC's satellite communications capability.

7 Signal Regiment is comprised of:

·229 Signal Squadron

·231 Signal Squadron

·232 Signal Squadron

Serving soldiers and their guests can get more information by logging into the Regiment's Web Site in ArmyNET.

16th Signal Regiment is based in Javelin Barracks in Germany, close to the border with the Netherlands. It is a busy, operational unit, working as part of 1 Signal Brigade in support of the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps Hadquarters.

Role

The Regiment has recently returned from a busy deployment in Afghanistan, and we expect to return there in Feb 2010.

The role of the Regiment is to support the communications requirements of the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps Headquarters. This is the largest deployable HQ that the British Army supports, and we work closely with 7 Signal regiment. We use up-to-date computer and networking technology combined with fibre-optic, telephone and satellite communications so that the headquarters can effectively share information between its departments and with the units that it commands.
The Regiment consists of 4 Squadrons: 230 (Malaya), 252 (Hong Kong), 255 (Bahrain) and Support Sqn.
